Amish Apple Fritter Bread Recipe Review: Easy, Moist, and Worth Making Twice
I accidentally ended up with way too many apples, so I tested the Amish apple fritter bread recipe everyone loves. Here’s how it turned out and what I’d do again.
This is not my original recipe. Full credit goes to Sweet Tea & Thyme. I’ve linked the original recipe here and sharing my personal experience and notes.
I keep forgetting to customize my weekly Hungryroot order, and for some reason I always end up with bags of apples. It’s fine, my toddler loves apples, but a whole bag is a lot. This was the second week in a row an entire bag showed up at my door, and at that point I felt like the universe was telling me to bake something. Naturally, I listened. To me, there was no better solution than apple bread. Because yum. Jameson can have some with breakfast and I get a sweet treat with my morning coffee. A true win win situation.
I went straight to Pinterest, where I find almost all my recipes, and landed on this Amish apple fritter bread from Sweet Tea & Thyme. The comments were full of rave reviews, and I felt like I couldn’t not try it. I’m happy to report it absolutely lived up to the hype, and I’m very pleased with my decision.
The recipe was very easy to follow, which I always appreciate. I doubled it so I could bake two loaves at once, mostly because I had that many apples to get rid of. It worked perfectly with no adjustments needed. I decided to skip the glaze because I’m not really into overly sweet breads and it felt like it would just be messy. Honestly, I don’t think it needs it at all.
I also took a little creative freedom with the apple mixture. I added nutmeg, clove, and allspice, all measured with my heart, and it turned out so good. Maybe less apple fritter and more apple spice, but I’m not mad about it. While baking, I was also watching my toddler, so my apples sat for a bit after being prepped. Apples and brown sugar get juicy fast, so I ended up with an apple mixture swimming in juice. I used it anyway, and I think it was totally fine. If anything, it may have made the bread even more moist.
The bread itself was incredibly moist, and I already had all the ingredients on hand, which made it even better. I usually gravitate toward recipes I can make in the moment without running to the store. I had never baked with sour cream before, and when I saw it listed, I was skeptical. I almost didn’t want to use it. But I really think that’s what set this loaf apart from others I’ve made. It added a richness that lasted even the next day, and I was pleasantly surprised.
Overall, this recipe is a win. I gave half of the second loaf to my mom and half to my sister, and they both said it was good, which means a lot because they are very honest people. It’s an easy, cozy bake and perfect if you ever find yourself drowning in apples like I was. I’ll definitely be making it again the next time Hungryroot sends me another surprise bag.
